Dentures or Implants: Which Should I Choose?
You have options if you need to fill a gap in your smile. Dentures are easier to get but come with some drawbacks. Dental implants give you a permanent fix that looks and feels natural.

Maybe your tooth got knocked out in an accident. Or maybe decay caused you to have it removed. Whatever the case, you probably want to fill that gap in your smile as quickly as possible.

We can help. Nisha Modi, DMD, and our Miracle Smile Dental team are experts in replacement teeth and offer solutions at our Aubrey, Texas, office. We can discuss your options and which might best suit you. And if you’re ready to get a long-lasting solution that looks, feels, and functions just like a natural tooth, we offer dental implants.

Implants aren’t for everyone, though. To help you determine if this option could fit your smile, let’s compare it to another common type of replacement teeth: dentures.

The pros and cons of dentures

When you think about dentures, you might think about using them to replace an arch of teeth. You can also get partial dentures if only one or a few teeth are missing.

Dentures are appealing because they’re relatively easy to get. They get tailored to fit in your mouth precisely where you need them. Usually, the replacement teeth come attached to a base that’s colored to match your gums.

You don’t need any dental treatment to prepare your mouth for dentures. You simply pop them into place.

That said, because the denture isn’t anchored firmly into your mouth, it often takes some getting used to. Many people report difficulty talking or eating as they learn to live with their dentures.

Additionally, dentures require special maintenance

A dental implant is probably better if you want something that feels like a natural tooth and doesn’t require additional oral care.

Dental implants: a permanent solution

Unlike dentures, which can be fiddly, a dental implant gets rooted into your mouth. The process starts when Dr. Modi implants a metal post into your jawbone. We then wait for your jaw to heal around that post, which usually takes 6–12 weeks.

Once that process is complete, you have a sturdy, long-lasting anchor for your replacement tooth. Then, we match your surrounding teeth with a replacement tooth and affix it to the post.

Moving forward, you have a full smile. Your replacement tooth should look, feel, and function like a natural tooth.

It doesn’t require any specialized care, either. When you brush, floss, and visit our team regularly, your dental implant should last your lifetime
